awg = American wire gauge.

3mm are usually used for earrings, using the smallest you can possibly use for each joint always looks better.

There seems to have been a large shake up in the manufacture of jump rings and they are now sold by the internal diameter, so a 3mm ID now resembles a 4mm OD jump ring and of course the thicker the wire the larger your jump ring will be. Earrings look especially  dreadful using these new sizes. These are still the old fashioned OD measured, how long I will be able to get them for I don't know.

Rolled Gold or  known in the USA as Gold Filled contain  much more  gold than gold plate and can be worn with no problem. The gold content is 14ct, apart from the 3mm OD.81mm thick or 20awg,  which is 9ct.

A layer of gold is fused under heat and  pressure to a base metal sometimes copper is used. The thickness of the layer of gold is 50 to 100,000 times thicker than gold plate. The thicker the plating the more durable the finish. To be called Gold Filled at least 1/20th of the total weight must be pure gold.
